A Monkey Book Club Reviews the Snack Menu

An original fictional comedy from CyberMunkiez.

The first discussion point

Nina founded a book club because she wanted thoughtful conversation. Gus joined because the invitation included the phrase “light refreshments.” Milo joined because he mistook it for a club about shelves.

Their first meeting began with a respectful silence. Nina asked what everyone thought of the opening.

“Too narrow,” Milo said. “You'd struggle to get a sofa through it.”

Nina gently clarified that she meant the book's opening. Milo looked disappointed. He had prepared diagrams.

This fictional monkey book club was already taking literature somewhere new.

A close reading

Gus admired the pacing, particularly the way crackers arrived before the dip. Nina asked him to identify a theme.

“Hospitality.”

She asked for a supporting example.

He held up a cheese cube.

Milo finally produced his reading material: an assembly guide for a bookcase. He praised the mysterious character known only as Part B and said the ending had left him with several unresolved screws.

Nina admitted that her own book was still in its delivery envelope. Work had been busy. Also, the envelope was unusually difficult to open.

The room relaxed. Everyone had been pretending, and pretending was tiring enough without crumbs.

A unanimous decision

They decided to read the snack menu together.

The club debated whether “rustic” meant expensive or unevenly chopped. Gus argued that “sharing platter” created unrealistic expectations. Milo wanted a glossary for aioli.

For the first time all evening, everyone contributed. Nobody checked their phone. Nina took three pages of notes.

Next month, they would discuss a novel. They agreed on the title, reading schedule, and who would bring napkins.

Gus asked whether the novel had chapters.

“Of course,” Nina said.

“Excellent. One course per chapter.”

Milo offered to build a shelf for the leftovers. Nina put that in the minutes under Character Development.
