The History of Monkeys in Space – The Brave Primates Who Traveled Beyond Earth Before Humans
Long before Neil Armstrong took that famous “one small step,” a brave band of unlikely astronauts had already risked it all to blaze a trail into the great unknown. No space suits. No choice. Just courage, bananas (we assume), and a rocket pointed at the sky. Yes—we’re talking about monkeys in space.
These early primate pioneers were sent where no human had yet dared to go, all in the name of science, exploration, and figuring out whether space travel would instantly turn you into a microwaved pancake. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. But not every monkey made it home, and those who did earned a quiet place in the history of spaceflight.
The journey begins in the late 1940s, when the U.S. Air Force and NASA (then NACA) were trying to understand how weightlessness, acceleration, and cosmic radiation might affect living beings. Enter Albert I, a rhesus monkey, who was launched aboard a V-2 rocket in 1948. Sadly, he didn’t survive the mission, and neither did Albert II, Albert III, or Albert IV. Yes, they kept using the name Albert, which honestly feels like a weird choice for morale.
But then came a game-changer: Albert VI (also known as Yorick), who in 1951 became the first monkey to survive a spaceflight and return safely to Earth—though 11 mice that went with him weren’t as lucky. Still, it was a breakthrough moment that proved mammals could indeed make the round-trip journey.
As the race to space heated up, so did the complexity of the missions. Miss Baker, a squirrel monkey, and Miss Able, a rhesus macaque, became America’s sweethearts in 1959 when they were launched aboard a Jupiter rocket and survived a 16-minute spaceflight. Their return was met with nationwide media coverage. Miss Baker even lived another 25 years, eventually buried in Huntsville, Alabama, with a granite headstone and regular banana tributes from fans.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Cold War, the Soviet Union wasn’t monkeying around either. They preferred dogs—like the famous Laika, the first animal to orbit Earth—but they also sent monkeys later on in the 1980s, including Abrek and Bion, aboard more advanced missions that studied long-term biological effects of space travel.
Fast forward to the 1970s through 1990s, and space monkeys were outfitted with more high-tech equipment: electrodes, heart monitors, and even tiny seats designed for monkey butts. NASA’s Spacelab missions included macaques that helped study bone density, muscle loss, and balance in microgravity. These missions weren’t just scientific—they were critical for designing the life support systems humans use in space today.
But as technology improved and ethical standards evolved, the practice of sending primates into space began to decline. Simulations, robots, and eventually willing human astronauts took over the job. Still, the legacy of those spacefaring monkeys remains.
They were unwitting heroes—brave little ambassadors launched into the void with no understanding of what lay ahead. They faced immense G-forces, weightlessness, and the unknown so humans could one day walk on the Moon and live on the ISS.
So next time you look up at the stars, spare a thought for the monkeys who got there first. They didn’t ask to be pioneers, but they helped shape humanity’s path to the cosmos. And in their own strange, banana-fueled way, they were among the first true astronauts.
